The Fairness Issue in NASDAQ Exchanges
Early NASDAQ infrastructure didn't have all of the fairness guarantees that modern exchanges happen today. Once we started trying to handle multiple clients on a single machine, it exposed some obvious and silly problems. We were using thousands of machines that were mostly idle. And then you had people who were connecting to as many different ports as they possible could.
