With kids that are oppositional it's all about personality match. It's pretty much all the battle because if they like that person they feel that person is working for them and not their parent. Sometimes you know when you have a really oppositional student it's way beyond an academic issue and that's why you may want to seek therapy. Do you advise meeting with the teacher to set up a system for making sure that homework comes home? Absolutely.
