The Roman Forum and Milestone

Rome was a powerful republic independent from its earlier etruscan overlords. In the fourth century b c, two back to back events occurred which would have a tremendous influence on the development of the roman empire. The word forum has given us the word forenz, meaning something related to the law or the courts. A modern mile comes from the latin word for thousand, but actually represents a measurement of slightly more than five thousand feet in modern measurements.
