The Standard Model of Friendship Is Mutual Obligation

In Europe, especially in Southern Europe, part of friendship is mutual obligation. In the United States, it seems to me that friendship is actually a much more modular model. I don't think we have a very strong ideal in this country about our obligations to other or duties to other. We're not as oriented towards the absolute emissoration of these parents.
