The secret psychology behind movie trailers

CHAPTER

Introduction

In 1913, Neil's Gramland created the world's first movie trailer. It was a trailer for a Broadway play called The Pleasure Seekers. A little while later, Urban Robins created the National Screen Service. From the 20s to the 60s, the NSS had a virtual monopoly on trailers. That was until amateur filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock started to create trailers for their own films. In the 70s, Steven Spielberg's trailer, Four Jaws, was considered a milestone in the trailer industry. Universal spent $1.8 million marketing Jaws, including an unprecedented 700,000 on television advertising.
