Researchers recruited volunteers to imagine that they were on death row, and then to write fictional statements about their imagined feelings. The researchers then compared those posts with the last words of people who were actually facing capital punishment. Results published in psychological science were pretty stark. And this suggests that perhaps counter intuitively, death becomes scarier when it's theoretical and remote than when it is a concrete reality closing in.
