Burgundy was a quasi-independent duchy in Eastern France, right along the border with the Holy Roman Empire. John could have simply absorbed this territory back into France and pulled his revenues and benefits directly to the French Crown. He thought he could do one better for his favorite son: Philip the Bold and his heirs were given Burgundy in perpetuity.
