The Mingo County Miners' Strike
By May 1920, 3000 of Mingo counties 4000 miners had been unionized. Much of the local government in Mingo County was pro Union. The police chief of the town of Madawan was profoundly pro minor. Sid Hatfield came from a family that was infamous for fighting and feuding. At 27 years old, Sid was one of the best gunmen in the state.
