The Penal Substitutionary Atonement Theory
The Penal Substitutionary Atonement theory has of late, unfortunately, been transformed into the gospel message itself. It's the idea that what was happening on the cross was Jesus gaining victory over sin and death. One of those assumptions is that God is a God of wrath and he's angry that his primary response to our sin is wrath and anger. And so God's primary response as a loving father is to turn and heal and restore us.
