CHAPTER

The Turing Machine

Allan turing er came up with a very simple model of what a computer might be. It has certain very well defined operations that limit what it can do. He showed that all sorts of things that we intuitively think of as computable are computable by a turing machine. But there are some things that cannot be computed, even in principle, by such a machine. Now what then happened, much, much later, is that people looked at this and said, here is a model for a universal computer. And the tewing machine is still discussed in those terms to day.
