How to Determine an Acid Base Disorder

The first thing to look at is the pH. If you have an acidemia, do you have a respiratory acidosis or a metabolic acidosis? You want to check to see if you have an anion gap or a non-gap acidosis. Then you want to figure out what your expected compensation should be for your primary disorder.
