The Difference Between a User ID and a Customer ID
A user ID is a unique group of numbers or letters that attaches to a unique profile. It's like your license plate number is a user ID for your car and how you can be looked up in the system. Same thing when you're browsing a website, you want to assign a unique user ID. A customer ID for Shopify is at that point where Shopify knows beyond a shadow of a doubt this customer is this person.
