V o two max is a determinant of performance. It plays into a limitation that could be effecting how fast, how far you can run a ride. Time triol intensity or completion duration are what i think we ought to be hanging our hat on. If you go the exact same work load, but it takes you ten millimeters more oxygen to do it, did you get better? I'd say you got worse, right?
