The Two Main Strands of Meditation
The two main strands in meditation are about trying to develop kindness and compassion. I think right from the very first time you meditate, they're both there together, even if you're not conscious of it. But probably most of us start meditating because we're feeling stressed out or in crisis or someone suggests it would be a good thing for us to do.
