The Importance of Consciousness

There's not any consensus about exactly which animals are conscious. But there is a trend towards being more liberal in describing consciousness to animals, both among scientists and people generally. I would love to see a whole bunch of people motivated by effective altruism come to the study of consciousness to help us figure out those questions. And also explain why it's gotten so much harder to analyze self-consciousness for humans these days. Maybe in the old days they tended to use the word 'self' More often now we're talking about something called phenomenal consciousness.
