Eros is the relationship, mediating between ignorance and wisdom. So diotyma then says, wisdom is one of the most beautiful things. And aros is the love of beauty. Aros must necessarily be a lover of wisdom. It's arguments like this that lead people to suggest that socrates might have just made diatima up. But notice that socrates has at this point capitulated to many of the main points that were rounded off by the speech of agathon.
