The Trilled R in Modern English
Trilled r was once very common in english as well. In fact, it can still be found in english dialects in scotland. A tapped or flapped r is similar to the trilled r but instead of an extended vibration, the tongue just briefly touches the ridge behind the upper teeth. Some speakers in parts of britain do essentially the same thing when making an r sound they just briefly tap that ridge with their tongue,. Again, this can be heard in places like scotland and wales. It can sometimes even be heard in the standard received pronunciation of the south.
