Saccharin: The First Artificial Sweetener

The Pure Food and Drug Act was passed in 1906. In 1907, the head of the Bureau of Chemistry started looking into saccharin. He got fired because he wanted to not just ban it, but investigate whether they might want to ban it. And strike three came in 1911 when the FDA labeled foods containing saccharin as adulterated. They clarified that saccharin wasn't harmful in 1912, but they did label it as an adulterant in 1911.
