Introduction

Tyranny emerged in the 7th century BC as a consequence of social and economic changes. Tyrants were often members of local elites, who had distinguished themselves in service of their polis. Not all tyrants were from the top-ranked families, however. Some were nobles who felt marginalized within the ruling class. In justifying their seas of power, they claimed to be fulfilling the will of the people.
