Nirvana's Nevermind set off the alternative 90s. The record industry was worth $14 billion in 1990, with revenues rising to $37 billion by 2000. As vinyl and pre-recorded cassettes fell out of favor, people began collecting CDs which offered higher profit margins for record labels. A copy of Led Zeppelin's fourth album selling for $24.99 is $41 in today's dollars.
