A lot of the people I know who are working on AGI safety right to try and have us not all the universe is value wiped out are in fact working on math problems. The history of math is filled with people who just solve random equations with no obvious use case, but then 20 years later someone uses it something amazing happens. "If I was better at math I would be doing math" he says. 'It's like a shred of basically anything else that I could be doing'
