The Queen's Speech in Honolulu

On january 16th 1893 Hawaii's queen lee leo kalani introduced a controversial new constitution. She threatened to enact it by royal fiat bypassing her cabinet and the legislature. The committee of safety worked late into the night to draft documents and create a new provisional government for hawaii. They called on allies to gather for a mass meeting at the downtown armory in hanaloo where they would air their grievances against the queen. On that day four boats delivered platoons totaling 164 men, including marines from uss boston anchored in hanAloo harbor. A naval cruiser stationed at Hana Harbor agreed to commit armed marines who marched uphill toward the royal palace.
