Russian scientist Eugenia Koida built the bot to kind of fill a gap in her own life. She had a best friend die in 2015 and she used the data from his text messages to build an AI persona that could recreate their conversations because she was missing him. The core psychological effect of being seen and feeling needed is so powerful that people can develop emotional feelings to something, not just someone.
