The Struggle for Freedom in Literature
The humanities were more what literature studies would grow out of. There was always a struggle between those who wanted freedom to have the life of the mind and those who wanted to limit it. It's tied together with the politics of all these city states. We're Americans, so we think that we should just be able to do whatever we want. And that is a dangerous thing to allow the government and state to do that.
