Introduction

This chapter explores the ancient Roman curse tablets or defixiones, focusing on their origins in the first and second century CE. It highlights the parallels between the curse tablets and amuletic incantation bowls in Sasanian-late antiquity, while providing insights into the embodiment of ritual practices and the cult of Magna mater at the far western frontier of the Roman Empire.
