The idea or the mechanism would be increase spinal extensor tone, stabilize the pelvis internally and stronger glute contraction. I think at the end of the day, the justification is it feels harder. That probably drives most things. When I see people doing seated good mornings for glutes, that's spinal extension. Even though the hip is going from a relatively flexed position to not, or flexed and extended position, it's not a glute exercise. Apparently it is.
