The recommendation is seven to nine hours for most adults. There are some people who only need six hours of sleep, and some who need more. If you regularly struggle to stay awake during the afternoon, it's likely that you are sleep deprived. And if you have significant issues with that, i suggest talking to your doctor. Many people never talk about sleep with their doctor, even though it's a very important factor in many other health problems.
