We can often do things in school that are actually d motivating for students. We don't intend it to be, but we're not paying attention to the effect on the student. Very gushy or inauthentic praise is teaching the child that we're kind of faking it and we don't really believe in them. The praise comes when they've attemptad it, at least attempt at it seriously. Don't have to succeed first time, but they have to give it a serious attempt. And especially secondary students like that's the stuff that matters to them, right? Not not like a twix or something.
