Some of it is that we have trained ourselves to listen only in order to prepare a response. I think another has space where we fool ourselves into listening is confirmation. While i might not be invested in the subject matter, i am invested in those people. Ad if i'm not invested in their communication, in what they want to share, how truly supportive and invested am i being in the relationship itself?
