Mechanical tension does seem to be the primary initiator of the cellular processes that kick off the process of muscle hypertrophy. I think people have taken that to a bit of an unjustifiable extreme to the point of Assuming that tension is the only thing that matters. There are assumptions that seem to be like baked in to a lot of that that I don't think there's data to support so far.
