David Swenson's 'It Will Never Fly'

David Swenson came up with the idea of swapping fixed rate and floating rate debt. He then created a way for Yale to invest in private equity, which was just getting started at the time. After two years on Wall Street he decided that it would be great if he could help create as strong a capability at Yale as you possibly could. When he left his job there they had an endowment of about one billion dollars - close to a billion dollars today.
