The UMW and the UMW in West Virginia
The ESOW system, whereby women were forced to pay for basic necessities by rape, is believed to have come to an end around 1934. The UMW succeeded finally in organizing the vast majority of miners in West Virginia. By 1935, the new deal brought new protections for workers and an end to many of the abuses that had long plagued the coal industry.
