The Final Ground Rule for Getting Students to Focus on Higher Order Concerns
As they become clear on that higher order concern, their capacity to organize the paper and articulate it come along for the ride. Students don't need to hear that you think they're wonderful at the start of the paper. I'm just saying the mere act of offering praise is not necessarily accomplishing anything. As it's mitigated, it actually becomes problematic.
