The one-fourth fat-free mass rule is more of an approximation than anything else as there are a number of variables that can affect the proportions of fat and lean mass loss during weight reduction. Lean mass levels can also change independently of or in the background of weight loss over long periods of time. This could certainly come into play and suggest greater than expected lean mass losses in long-term studies where body composition is measured.
