Hills are about as aerobically difficult as you can get. You're getting the max musculoskeletal stimulus to its lower impact, so less chance of injury. It's a great way to spice it up to mix in the neuromuscular and biomechanical patterns. In fact, when I won my two national championships, this was my go to workout every single week.
