Episode 19 – The Fifth Way | Fr. Steven Brock

Aquinas 101 - Course 2: Introduction to Thomistic Philosophy

CHAPTER

Is There a God in Nature?

The fifth way argues that all bodily natures, even those whose effects are extremely simple or elementary, must themselves be caused by a divine mind. Once we fully grasp this idea that a work of nature is the work of a mind, I think we can see that the God which the fifth way presents to us is not just the human mind writ large. We know how to make some things, but we have no notion of what it is to make the natures of things. That again is because every nature tends toward what is best for it.
