The JSF program was able to offer a superior fighter plane at a lower cost. By reaching beyond the existing customers of each of the three military branches, it aggregated demand previously divided among them. Lockheed Martin was awarded the massive $200 billion JSF contract in fall 2001. The first JSF-F-35 is set to be delivered in 2010.
