Francis Molina studies issues around race place gender and culture at the University of Southern California. She is a recipient with a MacArthur Fellowship which is usually referred to as a MacArthur Genius Grant she's also the granddaughter of Natalia Barraza a Mexican immigrant in the 1920s who owned a restaurant called the Nairit in Echo Park Los Angeles Dr. Molina writes about in her new book a place at theNairit and tells a story that really dig into what a restaurant can mean for a community it's a hi Francis thanks so much for joining us hi Francis you know today we think of LA right as being very Mexican but what was the city like when your grandmother arrived from Mexico
