The Difference Between Guilt and Shame
Guilt is a very, very powerful and very important emotion. It's one of what psychologists call the social emotions. People who are filled with shame are more likely to reoffend because there's almost a sense of I'm a bad person no matter what I do. Guilt, it's targeted at a very specific behavior. And it's something that the child can choose then not to do again. Shame is when we send a message to the child that you are wrong.
