The Impact of the UN Convention on the Continental Shelf

Before the UN Convention, some countries had defined their land territory as finishing at the continental shelf. The treaty stated that a continental shelf can extend up to 350 nautical miles from the coast. Countries with large continental shelves got another 150 nautical miles of ocean territory compared to those with smaller ones. This is particularly prevalent with countries around the North Pole, where there is strong evidence they have oil and natural gas reserves.
