It's hard to be compassionate if you don't have any cause to be generous or to share something nothing to be compassionate about it's not clear you can display courage if there's never a genuinely dangerous situation in which you would display courage. One way that I sometimes like to think about this approach is to ask people to think of two or three of the greatest lives that they think have ever been lived in their estimation and then try to subtract from those lives all of the suffering, he says.
