Probability Is a Mathematical Trick

Theory of probability was invented by people in the sixteenth century who wanted to win in games of chance. The originators of that theory did not think physical objects literally had the properties of fairness and literal randomness. It assumed literal randomness where they thought things were, perhaps seemingly only approximately so. This mathematical trick about human social games has found applications in divers fields as if it's fundamental in them. David lists them roughly in historic order here.
