The Myth of Marius's Early Years

As a teenager, Marius came across an eagle's nest with seven chicks inside. Eagles were seen by the Romans as sacred animals looked after by Jupiter himself. In 134 BC, he ran for and was elected one of 24 military tribunes for the Spanish legions. This began Marius's slow and sometimes agonizing climb up the Roman political ladder.
