Lactones are a cyclical compound. They can basically open up into like a straight chain. And that straight chain gets some protons added to it and it's called an acid. So basically it could be closed into the ring. That's a compound. Open out in a ring adds and protons. There's an acid and they that reaction. This is interesting because it's reacting with itself to make the ring to open and close it. We haven't talked about the fact that that can happen really, but molecules can react for themselves to become rings. In acidic conditions, actually, I think the lactone is favored over the open chain acid. But you can sort of control
