The Story of John the Fearless

Both Louis of Orléans and John the Fearless thought they had the right to exercise royal power. This was a factional contest over the rewards that royal government could provide. By 1407, the situation had become completely untenable. Without French government money, the dukes of Burgundy were on the cusp of financial ruin. With financial and political disaster in sight, John found a solution that was both easy and destabilizing.
