We know that oxidation is a prerequisite for the formation of foam cells which are the beginning of atherosclerosis. These foam cells are macrophages taking up LDL. But they're not just taking up any LDL because when we've done the experiments, macrophages will not ingest quote unquote native LDL That LDL must be oxidized.
