There is a mechanism by which more linoleic acid in the human diet increases the amount of linoleic Acid in the LDL particle. And if there's more linolean, that LDL is more susceptible to oxidation. We know that oxidation is a prerequisite for the formation of foam cells which are the beginning of atherosclerosis. These foam cells are macrophages taking up LDL. But they're not just taking up any LDL because when we've done the experiments, macrophages will not ingest quote unquote native LDL That LDL must be oxidized.
