Leopold and his terror squads depopulated the Congo by about 50%. It dropped from some 20 million people to some 10 million people. William Henry Shepherd was deeply disturbed by what was happening in Congo Free State. He described all this in things that he wrote, articles he wrote for missionary journals back home.
