Salt Mines in Hutchinson, Kansas

In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a main line from Harrington through Hutchinson. Salt mining became the major industry here because they had nothing else. They sent German and Italian prisoners of war from World War II to Kansas to be used to as forced labor to work in the salt mine.
