Patrice Le Mumba: The Prime Minister of the Congo

Patrice Le Mumba became Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1960. He wanted to make sure his new independent government had control over natural resources. But 11 days after independence, Belgium chopped off the mining province from the rest of the Congo. The prospect that the Congo's enormous mineral treasures would flow towards the Soviet Union and not continue flowing to Europe and the West sent shivers down the spines of neo-colonial powers.
