Thinking in English
The Differences Between Endonyms and Exonyms
There are two basic types of names for countries: endonyms and exonyms. Endonyms describe the ways in which a particular location, region or country is referred to by people who live there or by people who do not. Exonyms may be based on the sound of the word in the original language, or they may be based upon the way that the place is perceived by those who don't speak it. Cultural differences and linguistic barriers can also influence how a place is named in different languages.
